Here is our beautiful new Satokai logo. The outside design comes from part of Sensei Sato's family crest, or kamon. The Japanese characters around the bottom translate as: Sato-Ha Shito-Ryu International Federation. The middle character is Do, "way" or "path", as in Karate-do. It was beautifully executed by Misaki Narutaki, a professional Shodo calligrapher in Japan, who lived here for a few years and was friends with many at Hombu Dojo. Congratulations for a job well done!

We were very fortunate today: after a month and a half of ice and snow build-up, then a week of torrential rain, we arrive to beautiful, mild, even sunny, weather. Thank you UBC members, for coming in to rake and clear our temporary sand dojo. With all the (rightful!) attention on the local and global events this Saturday, we thought our Beach practice would be a quiet event seen only by friends, family, and a few passers-by. Here are [...]

Less bombastic than prior years - remember Sato Sensei in front of the erupting volcano?!? - but still highly dramatic. Tony Sensei wore a wetsuit and stood shoulder-deep in the January surf to capture this image of the annual beach practice!
It is with deep sadness that we announce the very sudden passing of Sensei Carole A'Hearn. We offer our deepest condolences to Marlon, her loving husband. Together, Carole and Marlon earned their Sandan black belts, as well as their Kubudo black belts. Carole was a member of our Shito-ryu Seikokai Association Directorship as Newsletter Editor, and also a member of the Karate BC Executive Committee. Her passion was Kobudo, and she taught at the Nikkei Centre. Carole leaves behind [...]
Last week, on June 16, Robert Sheng, the oldest member in our association, passed away. He had just turned 91. Robert Sensei was one of Sato Sensei's first students in Canada, starting his training in his mid-40s. He only stopped training in the last ten years, a 7th Degree Black Belt. He continued to teach Qi Gong, up until very recently. Our deepest sympathy to Robert Sensei's family. Thank you, Mrs. Sheng (Lillian), Mel, Roberta, Jennifer, and David, and your families. [...]
